Postpositions, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Put the postposition after the noun

Where English says in the house, Gujarati says the house in: ઘરમાં. So ટેબલ પર on the table, શાળા પછી after school, મિત્રો સાથે with friends.

  2. Join the short ones to the word

માં in, થી from, ને to and નું of are written as one word with the noun: બગીચામાં in the garden, લંડનથી from London, દાદીને to Grandma.

  3. Put ની or ના before the longer ones

Most longer postpositions follow ની: ઘરની બહાર outside the house, શાળાની પાછળ behind the school, ટેબલની નીચે under the table, બેંકની સામે opposite the bank, મારી સાથે with me.

  4. Change -ો and -ું nouns before a postposition

રસ્તો gives રસ્તા પર on the road and ઓરડો gives ઓરડામાં in the room. Only nouns ending in -ો and -ું change, to -ા; કબાટ stays as it is: કબાટમાં in the cupboard.

  5. Say for, with and without

માટે for: મારા માટે for me. સાથે with: મમ્મી સાથે with Mum. વગર and વિના without: ખાંડ વગર without sugar.

  6. Say instead of with ને બદલે

ચાને બદલે કૉફી coffee instead of tea; બસને બદલે અમે ટ્રેનમાં ગયા we went by train instead of by bus.

  7. Say I have with પાસે

    મારી પાસે સાઇકલ છે I have a bike, word for word near me is a bike. For family, use મારે: મારે એક બહેન છે I have a sister.

  8. Use the postpositions of time

    પહેલાં before, પછી after, સુધી until and થી from or since: સવારથી સાંજ સુધી from morning till evening, જમ્યા પછી after eating.

Common mistakes in Postpositions

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Putting the postposition first, as in માં ઘર.

It follows the noun, joined to it: ઘરમાં.

  • Keeping -ો before a postposition, as in રસ્તોમાં.

A noun ending in -ો takes -ા before a postposition: રસ્તામાં, on the way.

  • Writing I have a phone as હું ફોન છે.

    Gujarati says what you have with પાસે, near: મારી પાસે ફોન છે.

  • Writing મારું સાથે for with me.

    સાથે follows ની, so my becomes મારી: મારી સાથે, તમારી સાથે.
