Adverbs, quantifiers and intensifiers, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Make adverbs with -થી and રીતે

Many adverbs are a noun with -થી: ઝડપથી quickly, ધ્યાનથી carefully, શાંતિથી calmly. Others use રીતે, in a way: સારી રીતે well. Doubling an adjective works too: ધીમે ધીમે slowly.

  2. Say when

    આજે today, હમણાં now, પછી later or then, હંમેશાં always, ક્યારેક sometimes, વારંવાર often, દરરોજ every day.

  3. Say where

    અહીં here, ત્યાં there, અંદર inside, બહાર outside, ઉપર up, નીચે down, દૂર far, પાસે near. અહીં and ત્યાં often begin a sentence: અહીં ઘણી દુકાનો છે.

  4. Say how much with quantifiers and intensifiers

    બહુ and ખૂબ very, ઘણું a lot, થોડું and થોડુંક a little, જરા a bit, ખાસ કરીને especially, બહુ નહીં not much: મને સંગીત ખૂબ ગમે છે, ખાસ કરીને ગરબા.

  5. Say how sure you are

    ચોક્કસ certainly, ખરેખર really, ભલે all right, and કદાચ perhaps: કદાચ કાલે વરસાદ પડશે it might rain tomorrow.

  6. Give a result with એટલે and તેથી

Both mean so or that is why: બસ મોડી હતી, એટલે હું મોડો પહોંચ્યો the bus was late, so I arrived late.

  7. Compare how things are done

Put વધારે before an adverb for more: રાજ મારા કરતાં વધારે ઝડપથી દોડે છે Raj runs faster than me; સૌથી for the most. Recognise it at Foundation; use it at Higher.

Adverbs, quantifiers and intensifiers key terms

The words the specification and the mark schemes use, each defined the way an examiner wants it.

Common mistakes in Adverbs, quantifiers and intensifiers

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Putting the intensifier after its word, as in સારું બહુ.

In Gujarati the intensifier comes before the word it strengthens: બહુ સારું, ખૂબ મોટું.

  • Using ક્યારેક to mean never.

    ક્યારેક is sometimes. Never is ક્યારેય નહીં, or ક્યારેય with નથી.

  • Using an adjective where an adverb is needed, as in તે ઝડપી દોડે છે.

Use the adverb: તે ઝડપથી દોડે છે he runs quickly.

Answer: તે ઝડપથી દોડે છે.

To say how someone runs, use the adverb ઝડપથી, not the adjective ઝડપી: તે ઝડપથી દોડે છે.

  1. ઝડપી is an adjective: fast.
  2. ઝડપથી is the adverb: quickly.
  3. So તે ઝડપથી દોડે છે.
