Adjectives, explained point by point
Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.
Make adjectives ending in -ો agree
An adjective ending in -ો changes with its noun: સારો છોકરો, સારી છોકરી, સારું ઘર, સારા છોકરા, સારાં ઘર. મોટો, નાનો, નવો, જૂનો, કાળો and પીળો work the same way.
Leave other adjectives as they are
Adjectives with any other ending never change: લાલ, સુંદર, હોશિયાર, ગરીબ. So સુંદર છોકરો and સુંદર છોકરી.
Put the adjective before the noun, or after it with છે
મોટું ઘર is a big house; ઘર મોટું છે says the house is big. Either way the adjective agrees.
Point with આ, તે and પેલું
આ this and તે that never change: આ પુસ્તક, તે છોકરી. પેલું, that one over there, agrees: પેલો છોકરો, પેલી બસ, પેલું મકાન.
Make my, your and the rest agree with the thing owned
મારું, તારું, તમારું, તેનું, અમારું and આપણું all change like સારું: મારો ભાઈ, મારી બહેન, મારું ઘર, મારા મિત્રો.
Compare with કરતાં, વધારે and ઓછું
કરતાં follows the thing you compare with: રાજ મારા કરતાં ઊંચો છે Raj is taller than me. વધારે more and ઓછું less make it clear: આ ફોન પેલા કરતાં વધારે મોંઘો છે. Recognise it at Foundation; use it at Higher.
Say the most with સૌથી
તે વર્ગમાં સૌથી હોશિયાર છે she is the cleverest in the class. સૌ કરતાં means the same. At Higher, the doubled form says the very biggest: મોટામાં મોટું.
Ask which and what kind
કયો, કઈ and કયું mean which: તને કયો રંગ ગમે છે? કેવો, કેવી and કેવું ask what something is like: તમારી શાળા કેવી છે? what is your school like?

Common mistakes in Adjectives
The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.
Leaving a variable adjective masculine, as in સારો છોકરી.
An -ો adjective agrees with its noun, and છોકરી is feminine, so સારી છોકરી.
Changing an invariable adjective, as in લાલી ગાડી.
Only -ો adjectives change. લાલ stays લાલ: લાલ ગાડી.
Putting કરતાં in front of what you compare with, as in રાજ કરતાં મારા ઊંચો છે for Raj is taller than me.
કરતાં comes straight after the thing you compare with: રાજ મારા કરતાં ઊંચો છે.

Answer: મોટા
ઘરમાં has a postposition, so the adjective before it takes its -ા form: મોટા ઘરમાં, in a big house.
- ઘરમાં has માં on it.
- An -ો adjective takes -ા before such a noun.
- So અમે એક મોટા ઘરમાં રહીએ છીએ.
