Haben, sein, werden and wissen, explained point by point
Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.
Learn sein by heart
Sein, to be, follows no pattern: ich bin, du bist, er ist, wir sind, ihr seid, sie sind. It is the commonest verb in German and the helper for many verbs in the perfect tense.
Learn haben
Haben, to have, drops its b for du and er: ich habe, du hast, er hat, wir haben, ihr habt, sie haben. It is the helper for most verbs in the perfect tense.
Learn werden and wissen
Werden (to become, and the helper of the future) goes ich werde, du wirst, er wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie werden. Wissen (to know a fact) goes ich weiß, du weißt, er weiß, then regular wir wissen. To know a person or a place is kennen.
Say what English says with be, using haben
German has hunger, thirst and fear where English is hungry, thirsty or afraid: Ich habe Hunger, Ich habe Durst, Ich habe Angst vor Hunden. Lust haben means to feel like: Hast du Lust auf Kino? Schmerzen haben is to be in pain.
Use es gibt for there is and there are
Es gibt takes the accusative and never changes for a plural: Es gibt einen Park, Es gibt viele Geschäfte. In the past it is es gab: Es gab kein Wasser.
Use war and hatte for was and had
For the past of sein and haben, German uses the simple past even in speech: ich war, du warst, wir waren; ich hatte, du hattest, wir hatten. Ich war müde und hatte Hunger.
