The conditional, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Form would with würde and an infinitive

Würde goes second and the infinitive goes to the end: Ich würde gern reisen, Wir würden ein Auto kaufen. It goes ich würde, du würdest, er würde, wir würden, ihr würdet, sie würden.

  2. Use hätte and wäre for would have and would be

Haben and sein have their own forms: ich hätte, du hättest, wir hätten; ich wäre, du wärst, wir wären. Das wäre toll, Ich hätte gern einen Hund.

  3. Use sollte for should

Sollte with an infinitive gives advice: Du solltest mehr schlafen, Man sollte weniger Plastik benutzen.

  4. Build a sentence with wenn

Wenn sends its verb to the end, and the main clause then starts with its verb: Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich um die Welt reisen. Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen.

  5. Keep to the four forms the GCSE uses

At GCSE the conditional is würde, hätte, wäre and sollte. For any other verb, use würde with its infinitive: ich würde gehen, ich würde kommen.

The conditional key terms

The words the specification and the mark schemes use, each defined the way an examiner wants it.

Conditional
What would happen: ich würde spielen, ich hätte, ich wäre.
würde
Would: the helper of the conditional, with an infinitive at the end.
hätte
Would have: Ich hätte gern mehr Zeit.
wäre
Would be, the conditional of sein: Das wäre schön.
wenn clause
The if-clause, with its verb at the end: wenn ich Geld hätte.
sollte
Should, for advice: Du solltest das probieren.

Common mistakes in The conditional

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Using würde with haben or sein, as in Ich würde reich sein, where Ich wäre reich is what is written.

Use wäre and hätte: Ich wäre reich, Ich hätte Zeit.

  • Putting the verb second after a wenn clause, as in Wenn ich Zeit hätte, ich würde lesen.

After the wenn clause comes the verb: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich lesen.

  • Leaving out the umlaut, as in ich wurde for I would.

Would is würde, with an umlaut; without it, wurde means became.

  • Writing Ich würde gehe.

After würde, the infinitive goes to the end: Ich würde gehen.

Answer: hätten ... würden

The imagined condition takes hätten, at the end of the wenn clause, and the result takes würden, straight after the comma.

  1. If we had: wenn wir ... hätten.
  2. We would visit: würden wir ... besuchen.
  3. Both are conditional forms.
