Must, should and have to, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Say should with the infinitive and જોઈએ

    મારે વધારે પાણી પીવું જોઈએ I should drink more water. The person takes the -એ form: મારે, તારે, તેણે, અમારે, આપણે, તમારે, તેમણે, or a name with -એ.

  2. Make the infinitive agree with its object

    The -વું changes to match the thing to be done: મારે કસરત કરવી જોઈએ (કસરત is feminine), મારે પત્ર લખવો જોઈએ (પત્ર is masculine), મારે ગૃહકાર્ય કરવું જોઈએ (neuter). With no object it stays -વું: આપણે વહેલા જવું જોઈએ.

  3. Say have to with પડવું

    મારે ચાલીને શાળાએ જવું પડે છે I have to walk to school. પડવું carries the tense: મારે રાહ જોવી પડી I had to wait, આપણે જવું પડશે we will have to go.

  4. Say need with જોઈએ છે

    With a thing rather than an action, the person takes -ને: મને નવી પેન જોઈએ છે I need a new pen, તમને શું જોઈએ છે? what would you like?

  5. Say something is due with -વાનું છે

મારે કાલે પરીક્ષા આપવાની છે I have an exam to sit tomorrow. The ending agrees with the thing: પરીક્ષા is feminine, so આપવાની.

  6. Say should not with ન

    ન goes before the infinitive: આપણે પ્લાસ્ટિક ન વાપરવું જોઈએ we should not use plastic, તમારે મોડું ન કરવું જોઈએ you should not be late.

  7. Give advice and views with જોઈએ

It is the natural way to argue a point in speaking and writing: સરકારે વધારે વૃક્ષો વાવવાં જોઈએ the government should plant more trees, દરેકે રોજ કસરત કરવી જોઈએ everyone should exercise every day.

Common mistakes in Must, should and have to

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Writing હું જવું જોઈએ for I should go.

    The person takes its -એ form: મારે જવું જોઈએ.

  • Leaving the infinitive as -વું with a feminine object, as in મારે કસરત કરવું જોઈએ.

    કસરત is feminine, so કરવી: મારે કસરત કરવી જોઈએ.

  • Adding છે to should, as in મારે જવું જોઈએ છે.

જોઈએ on its own means should: મારે જવું જોઈએ. જોઈએ છે means need or want.
