Comparisons, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Compare two things with 比bǐ

One thing, 比bǐ, the other, then the adjective: 我wǒ比bǐ我wǒ哥哥gēge高gāo。 (I'm taller than my brother.) 今天jīntiān比bǐ昨天zuótiān冷lěng。 The adjective stands on its own here, with no 很hěn or 非常fēicháng.

  2. Say fairly or quite with 比较bǐjiào

比较bǐjiào before an adjective means fairly, with no second thing named: 这zhè个gè学校xuéxiào比较bǐjiào大dà。 (This school is fairly big.) 我wǒ比较bǐjiào喜欢xǐhuan数学shùxué。 (I quite like maths.)

  3. Say the most with 最zuì

最zuì before an adjective or a verb means the most: 我wǒ最zuì喜欢xǐhuan的de科目kēmù是shì历史lìshǐ。 (My favourite subject is history.) 在zài我们wǒmen家jiā,我wǒ最zuì高gāo。 (I'm the tallest in our family.)

  4. Say the same with 跟gēn…一样yīyàng

One thing, 跟gēn, the other, 一样yīyàng: 我wǒ的de手机shǒujī跟gēn你nǐ的de一样yīyàng。 (My phone is the same as yours.) Add an adjective for as … as: 我wǒ跟gēn我wǒ姐姐jiějie一样yīyàng高gāo。 和hé can take the place of 跟gēn.

  5. Say different with 不bù一样yīyàng

Put 不bù before 一样yīyàng: 英国Yīngguó的de天气tiānqì跟gēn中国Zhōngguó的de不bù一样yīyàng。 (The weather in Britain is different from China's.) 一样yīyàng and 不bù一样yīyàng can also end a sentence on their own: 我们wǒmen不bù一样yīyàng。

  6. Say not as … as with 没有méiyǒu…那么nàme

One thing, 没有méiyǒu, the other, 那么nàme and the adjective: 伦敦Lúndūn没有méiyǒu北京Běijīng那么nàme冷lěng。 (London isn't as cold as Beijing.) 那么nàme can be left out: 我wǒ没有méiyǒu他tā高gāo。 (I'm not as tall as him.)

  7. Say by how much: the amount goes after the adjectiveHigher only

The difference comes last: 我wǒ比bǐ他tā大dà两liǎng岁suì。 (I'm two years older than him.) 这zhè件jiàn比bǐ那nà件jiàn贵guì五wǔ十shí块kuài。 (This one is ¥50 dearer than that one.) For a little, add 一点儿yīdiǎnr: 今天jīntiān比bǐ昨天zuótiān热rè一点儿yīdiǎnr。

  8. Say much more with 得de多duō, and even more with 更gèngHigher only

得de多duō after the adjective means much more: 北京Běijīng比bǐ伦敦Lúndūn大dà得de多duō。 更gèng before the adjective means even more: 今天jīntiān比bǐ昨天zuótiān更gèng冷lěng。 On its own, 更gèng喜欢xǐhuan means prefer: 我wǒ更gèng喜欢xǐhuan夏天xiàtiān。

Comparisons key terms

The words the specification and the mark schemes use, each defined the way an examiner wants it.

Common mistakes in Comparisons

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Putting 很hěn into a 比bǐ sentence, as in 我wǒ比bǐ他tā很hěn高gāo.

The adjective stands alone after 比bǐ: 我wǒ比bǐ他tā高gāo. For even more, put 更gèng before it: 我wǒ比bǐ他tā更gèng高gāo.

  • Using English order, as in 我wǒ高gāo比bǐ他tā.

比bǐ and the other thing come before the adjective: 我wǒ比bǐ他tā高gāo.

  • Saying 伦敦Lúndūn不bù比bǐ北京Běijīng冷lěng for London is not as cold as Beijing.

Use 没有méiyǒu: 伦敦Lúndūn没有méiyǒu北京Běijīng那么nàme冷lěng. 不bù比bǐ means no more than, which says something else.

  • Putting 一样yīyàng after the adjective, as in 我wǒ跟gēn他tā高gāo一样yīyàng.

一样yīyàng comes first and the adjective after it, the reverse of English: 我wǒ跟gēn他tā一样yīyàng高gāo.

  • Putting the amount before the adjective, as in 我wǒ比bǐ他tā两liǎng岁suì大dà.Higher only

The amount of the difference goes last, after the adjective: 我wǒ比bǐ他tā大dà两liǎng岁suì.
