Asking questions, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Turn a statement into a question with 吗ma

Add 吗ma to the end and leave everything else as it was: 你nǐ是shì英国人Yīngguórén。 becomes 你nǐ是shì英国人Yīngguórén吗ma? Chinese has no single word for yes or no, so answer with the verb: 是shì。 or 不bù是shì。, 喜欢xǐhuan。 or 不bù喜欢xǐhuan。

  2. Ask with the verb, then 不bù, then the verb again

Saying the verb twice with 不bù between makes a question too: 你nǐ去qù不bù去qù? (Are you going?) 好hǎo不bù好hǎo? (Is that OK?) For 有yǒu it is 有yǒu没有méiyǒu: 你nǐ有yǒu没有méiyǒu哥哥gēge? This kind of question never takes 吗ma as well.

  3. Put the question word where the answer will go

Chinese doesn't move question words to the front. 什么shénme (what), 谁shéi (who), 哪儿nǎr (where), 哪个nǎge (which), 几jǐ and 多少duōshao (how many) sit where the answer will: 你nǐ喜欢xǐhuan什么shénme? 我wǒ喜欢xǐhuan音乐yīnyuè。 你nǐ去qù哪儿nǎr? 我wǒ去qù商店shāngdiàn。 Swap in the answer and you have your reply.

  4. Ask when, why and how

什么shénme时候shíhou (when) comes before the verb: 你nǐ什么shénme时候shíhou去qù中国Zhōngguó? 为什么wèi shénme (why) is answered with 因为yīnwèi: 你nǐ为什么wèi shénme喜欢xǐhuan汉语Hànyǔ? 怎么zěnme before a verb asks how: 你nǐ怎么zěnme去qù学校xuéxiào? 怎么样zěnmeyàng asks what something is like, or how a plan sounds: 你nǐ的de学校xuéxiào怎么样zěnmeyàng? 我们wǒmen去qù看kàn电影diànyǐng,怎么样zěnmeyàng?

  5. Offer a choice with 还是háishi

还是háishi means or in a question: 你nǐ喝hē茶chá还是háishi咖啡kāfēi? (Are you having tea or coffee?) It makes the question by itself, so it never takes 吗ma.

  6. End with 呢ne or 吧ba

呢ne passes the same question back: 我wǒ很hěn好hǎo,你nǐ呢ne? (I'm fine, and you?) After a noun on its own, it asks where something is: 我wǒ的de手机shǒujī呢ne? 吧ba checks something you think is true, or makes a suggestion: 你nǐ是shì王Wáng老师lǎoshī吧ba? (You're Mr Wang, aren't you?) 我们wǒmen回huí家jiā吧ba。 (Let's go home.)

  7. Ask how far and how long with 多duō远yuǎn, 多久duō jiǔ and 多duō长cháng时间shíjiānHigher only

多duō before an adjective asks how much of it: 你nǐ家jiā离lí学校xuéxiào多duō远yuǎn? (How far is your home from school?) 多久duō jiǔ and 多duō长cháng时间shíjiān ask how long: 你nǐ学xué了le多duō长cháng时间shíjiān汉语Hànyǔ? 你nǐ在zài中国Zhōngguó住zhù了le多久duō jiǔ?

  8. Use a question word for everyone, nothing or somethingHigher only

With 都dōu or 也yě, a question word covers everyone or everything: 谁shéi都dōu喜欢xǐhuan他tā。 (Everyone likes him.) 我wǒ什么shénme都dōu不bù想xiǎng吃chī。 (I don't want to eat anything.) In a 吗ma question, 什么shénme means something: 你nǐ想xiǎng吃chī点儿diǎnr什么shénme吗ma? A question can also sit inside a statement: 我wǒ不bù知道zhīdao他tā住zhù在zài哪儿nǎr。 (I don't know where he lives.)

Asking questions key terms

The words the specification and the mark schemes use, each defined the way an examiner wants it.

吗ma
Added to the end of a statement to make a yes-or-no question, as in 你nǐ好hǎo吗ma, how are you.
Verb-not-verb question
A question made by saying the verb, then 不bù and the verb again: 你nǐ去qù不bù去qù? It takes no 吗ma.
Question word
A word such as 什么shénme, 谁shéi or 哪儿nǎr that asks for a piece of information. It sits where the answer will go.
还是háishi
Or, in a question offering a choice: 茶chá还是háishi咖啡kāfēi asks tea or coffee.
呢ne
Asks the same question back, as in 你nǐ呢ne? (and you?), or asks where something is.
吧ba
Checks something you think is true, or makes a suggestion: 我们wǒmen回huí家jiā吧ba (let's go home).
怎么zěnme and 怎么样zěnmeyàng
怎么zěnme before a verb asks how to do something; 怎么样zěnmeyàng asks what something is like or how a plan sounds.
几jǐ and 多少duōshao
How many: 几jǐ for a small number, with a measure word, and 多少duōshao for any number, prices included.
Indirect questionHigher only
A question inside a statement, with no 吗ma: 我wǒ不bù知道zhīdao他tā是shì谁shéi (I don't know who he is).

Common mistakes in Asking questions

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Adding 吗ma to a question that already has a question word, as in 你nǐ叫jiào什么shénme名字míngzi吗ma?

A question word makes the question by itself: 你nǐ叫jiào什么shénme名字míngzi? Use 吗ma only to turn a statement into a yes-or-no question.

  • Moving the question word to the front, as in 什么shénme你nǐ喜欢xǐhuan?

Leave it where the answer goes, 你nǐ喜欢xǐhuan什么shénme, and the answer slots into the same place: 我wǒ喜欢xǐhuan音乐yīnyuè.

  • Answering every 吗ma question with 是shì, as in 是shì for 你nǐ喜欢xǐhuan喝hē茶chá吗ma?

Answer with the verb the question used: 喜欢xǐhuan or 不bù喜欢xǐhuan, 有yǒu or 没有méiyǒu.

  • Asking 你nǐ怎么样zěnmeyàng去qù学校xuéxiào? for how do you get to school.

怎么zěnme before a verb asks how: 你nǐ怎么zěnme去qù学校xuéxiào. 怎么样zěnmeyàng stands on its own and asks what something is like: 你nǐ的de学校xuéxiào怎么样zěnmeyàng.

  • Adding 吗ma to a verb-not-verb or a 还是háishi question, as in 你nǐ去qù不bù去qù吗ma?

Both kinds are questions already, so they need nothing added: 你nǐ去qù不bù去qù, 你nǐ喝hē茶chá还是háishi咖啡kāfēi.
