Adjectives and adverbs, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Use an adjective as the verb, with 很hěn

An adjective can be the whole verb of a sentence, with no 是shì: 我wǒ很hěn忙máng。 北京Běijīng很hěn大dà。 很hěn here mostly just links the two; leave it out and the sentence sounds like a comparison: 这zhè个gè大dà,那nà个gè小xiǎo。 (This one's bigger, that one's smaller.) The negative is 不bù on its own: 今天jīntiān不bù冷lěng。

  2. Say how much with 非常fēicháng, 真zhēn and 太tài…了le

非常fēicháng means extremely: 非常fēicháng好hǎo. 真zhēn makes an exclamation, really or so: 真zhēn漂亮piàoliang! 太tài…了le means too, or so, with 了le at the end: 太tài贵guì了le! (It's too expensive!) 不bù太tài softens a negative: 不bù太tài难nán (not very hard).

  3. Put an adjective before a noun, with or without 的de

A one-syllable adjective joins its noun directly: 好hǎo朋友péngyou, 新xīn衣服yīfu, 大dà房子fángzi. A longer adjective, or one with 很hěn, takes 的de in between: 漂亮piàoliang的de花园huāyuán, 很hěn大dà的de房子fángzi.

  4. Use 好hǎo and 难nán before a verb

好hǎo or 难nán in front of a verb make a describing word for how pleasant or how hard something is: 好吃hǎochī (tasty, good to eat), 难nán学xué (hard to learn). 中文Zhōngwén很hěn难nán写xiě,可是kěshì很hěn有意思yǒu yìsi。 (Chinese is hard to write, but very interesting.)

  5. Put 也yě, 还hái and 常常chángcháng before the verb

Adverbs go after the subject and before the verb, never at the start or the end. 也yě means also or too: 我wǒ也yě喜欢xǐhuan足球zúqiú。 还hái means still, or as well: 他tā还hái在zài学校xuéxiào。 我wǒ会huì说shuō英语Yīngyǔ,还hái会huì说shuō汉语Hànyǔ。 常常chángcháng means often: 我wǒ常常chángcháng去qù游泳yóuyǒng。 Words like 有yǒu时候shíhou (sometimes) take the same place.

  6. Use 一定yīdìng and 就jiù

一定yīdìng means certainly: 我wǒ明天míngtiān一定yīdìng来lái。 (I'll definitely come tomorrow.) 就jiù points to something exactly, or to something happening at once: 我wǒ家jiā就jiù在zài学校xuéxiào旁边pángbiān。 (My home is right next to the school.) 我wǒ就jiù来lái! (I'm coming right now!)

  7. Make an adjective stronger with 极了jí le, 不得了bùdéliǎo and 得de多duōHigher only

极了jí le after an adjective means extremely: 好hǎo极了jí le! 不得了bùdéliǎo after 得de means unbelievably: 热rè得de不得了bùdéliǎo. 得de多duō means much more, in a comparison: 北京Běijīng比bǐ伦敦Lúndūn大dà得de多duō。 好hǎo听tīng, 好hǎo看kàn and 难看nánkàn work like 好吃hǎochī: 这zhè个gè电影diànyǐng很hěn好hǎo看kàn。

  8. Say how often with 经常jīngcháng and 从来cóngláiHigher only

经常jīngcháng means often, a little more formal than 常常chángcháng: 我wǒ经常jīngcháng运动yùndòng。 从来cónglái不bù means never, for a habit: 我wǒ从来cónglái不bù喝hē咖啡kāfēi。 从来cónglái没méi with 过guò means have never: 我wǒ从来cónglái没méi去qù过guò中国Zhōngguó。

The words the specification and the mark schemes use, each defined the way an examiner wants it.

Adjective as verb
An adjective doing the work of the verb, with no 是shì: the 忙máng in 我wǒ很hěn忙máng.
很hěn
Very, though often just the link before an adjective: 她tā很hěn高gāo.
非常fēicháng
Extremely, a step stronger than 很hěn: 非常fēicháng好hǎo.
太tài…了le
Too, or so, around an adjective: 太tài贵guì了le (too expensive).
真zhēn
Really or so, in an exclamation, as in 真zhēn好吃hǎochī, it's really tasty.

Certainly or definitely, before the verb: 我wǒ一定yīdìng去qù.
极了jí leHigher only

Never, for something you never do as a habit: 我wǒ从来cónglái不bù吃chī肉ròu.

Common mistakes in Adjectives and adverbs

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Putting 是shì before an adjective, as in 北京Běijīng是shì大dà.

The adjective is the verb: 北京Běijīng很hěn大dà. Use 很hěn where English has is.

  • Putting 也yě at the start, as in 也yě我wǒ喜欢xǐhuan.

Adverbs go after the subject: 我wǒ也yě喜欢xǐhuan. The same goes for 还hái, 常常chángcháng and 一定yīdìng.

  • Leaving 了le off 太tài, as in 太tài贵guì on its own.

Too much needs both halves, 太tài before the adjective and 了le after it: 太tài贵guì了le, 太tài难nán了le.

  • Leaving 的de out after 很hěn and an adjective, as in 很hěn大dà房子fángzi.

With 很hěn in front, add 的de before the noun: 很hěn大dà的de房子fángzi.

  • Putting 极了jí le before the adjective, as in 极了jí le好hǎo.Higher only

极了jí le always comes after the adjective it makes stronger: 好hǎo极了jí le, 累lèi极了jí le.
