Numbers, dates and time, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Count from zero to ninety-nine, and say first and second

One to ten are 一yī, 二èr, 三sān, 四sì, 五wǔ, 六liù, 七qī, 八bā, 九jiǔ and 十shí, and zero is 零líng. Bigger numbers are built as you say them: 十一shíyī is ten-one (11), 二十èrshí two-ten (20) and 九十九jiǔshíjiǔ 99. Put 第dì in front for first, second and so on: 第一dìyī, 第二dì'èr天tiān (the second day).

  2. Count in hundreds, thousands and ten thousands

百bǎi is a hundred, 千qiān a thousand and 万wàn ten thousand: 三sān百bǎi, 两liǎng千qiān. Chinese counts big numbers in ten thousands, so 50,000 is 五wǔ万wàn and a million is 一yī百bǎi万wàn, a hundred ten-thousands. A gap inside a number is filled with 零líng: 105 is 一yī百bǎi零líng五wǔ, while 一yī百bǎi五wǔ means 150.

  3. Choose between 二èr and 两liǎng

Use 两liǎng for two of something, before a measure word: 两liǎng个gè人rén, 两liǎng本běn书shū, 两liǎng点diǎn (two o'clock). Keep 二èr for counting and inside longer numbers (十shí二èr, 二十èrshí), in dates (二月èryuè) and after 第dì (第二dì'èr). Before 千qiān and 万wàn, 两liǎng is the usual choice: 两liǎng千qiān.

  4. Give the date, biggest part first

A date runs year, month, day, then the day of the week: 2026年nián10月yuè9日rì,星期五xīngqīwǔ. Say the year one digit at a time (èr líng èr liù nián), and use 号hào for the day when you speak: 十月shíyuè九jiǔ号hào. The days are 星期xīngqī and a number, from Monday, 星期一xīngqīyī, to Saturday, 星期六xīngqīliù; Sunday is 星期天xīngqītiān or 星期日xīngqīrì. Your birthday follows the same pattern: 我wǒ的de生日shēngrì是shì五月wǔyuè三sān号hào。

  5. Tell the time with 点diǎn, 半bàn, 刻kè and 分fēn

点diǎn is o'clock: 八bā点diǎn. Half past is 八bā点diǎn半bàn, quarter past 八bā点diǎn一yī刻kè and ten past 八bā点diǎn十shí分fēn. The part of the day comes first, so 7 a.m. is 早上zǎoshang七qī点diǎn and 8 p.m. is 晚上wǎnshang八bā点diǎn. To ask the time, say 现在xiànzài几jǐ点diǎn?

  6. Give prices in 块kuài and 元yuán

Chinese money is the yuan: 元yuán on a price tag, 块kuài when you say it. 十shí五wǔ块kuài is ¥15, and 三sān块kuài五wǔ is ¥3.50, with the smaller unit left off the end. Ask a price with 多少duōshao钱qián?, as in 这zhè件jiàn衣服yīfu多少duōshao钱qián? Pounds are 英镑yīngbàng: 五wǔ英镑yīngbàng.

  7. Say how old someone is

Ask a child 你nǐ几jǐ岁suì? and a teenager or an adult 你nǐ多duō大dà?. Answer with the number and 岁suì, usually without 是shì: 我wǒ十shí五wǔ岁suì。 To say someone has reached an age, add 了le: 我wǒ妹妹mèimei十shí岁suì了le。

  8. Say how long something lasts, after the verb

When something happens goes before the verb, but how long it lasts goes after it: 我wǒ每天měitiān看kàn一yī个gè小时xiǎoshí电视diànshì。 (I watch TV for an hour a day.) 我wǒ学xué了le两liǎng年nián汉语Hànyǔ。 (I studied Chinese for two years.) 小时xiǎoshí counts hours and 分钟fēnzhōng minutes, while 天tiān and 年nián count days and years.

Common mistakes in Numbers, dates and time

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Using 二èr before a measure word, as in 二èr个gè人rén or 二èr点diǎn.

Two of something is 两liǎng: 两liǎng个gè人rén, 两liǎng点diǎn. Keep 二èr for counting and for numbers like 十shí二èr.

  • Saying 10,000 as ten thousands, 十shí千qiān.

Chinese has its own word, 万wàn: 10,000 is 一yī万wàn, 50,000 五wǔ万wàn and a million 一yī百bǎi万wàn.

  • Leaving out 零líng, so that 105 comes out as 一yī百bǎi五wǔ, which means 150.

Fill a gap inside a number with 零líng: 一yī百bǎi零líng五wǔ is 105.

  • Writing the date in English order, as in 9日rì10月yuè2026年nián.

Go from big to small: year, month, day. 2026年nián10月yuè9日rì.

  • Putting how long before the verb, as in 我wǒ一yī个gè小时xiǎoshí看kàn电视diànshì.

How long goes after the verb: 我wǒ看kàn一yī个gè小时xiǎoshí电视diànshì. When goes before it: 我wǒ晚上wǎnshang看kàn电视diànshì.
