How do I get a 9 in GCSE Chemistry?
A 9 in GCSE Chemistry is rare. The last marks sit on multi-step quantitative work and the long explanations, not on recalling a definition. You need bonding and moles automatic, then enough applied chemistry that a typical paper has nowhere left to hide. Required practicals appear as questions inside those papers. Sit the separate Chemistry specification, not Combined, if you want a single-subject 9.

What a 9 is actually testing
Chemistry 9s are not won on flashcards. The top of the paper asks you to carry a calculation across several steps without dropping a unit, and to write a coherent explanation that uses the right ideas in the right order. Recalling a definition gets you into the question. Finishing it is the 9.
If you are on Combined Science, you cannot be awarded a single Chemistry 9. Combined is a double grade across all three sciences, like 9-9. Separate (triple) Chemistry is the single-subject grade. Use the specification you are actually sitting.
Moles first, then everything that sits on moles
Quantitative chemistry is the language of the higher paper. Relative formula mass, moles, concentration, reacting masses, atom economy: if those are slow, later topics that look like "rates" or "electrolysis" still leak because they needed a mole step. Drill until a straightforward mole question is boring. Then live on the questions that hide the mole step inside a practical or an unfamiliar context.
- Write every step and every unit. A dropped unit is a dropped mark at the top of the paper.
- Re-do the same calculation type a few days later, from a blank page. Watching a video of the method is not the skill.
- For the six-mark explanations, plan three or four points before you write, then use the mark scheme as a checklist, not as a script to memorise.
- Required practicals: know the method, the variables, and the graph you would draw. They are examined as questions, not as a write-up you submit.
The rest of the specification still has nowhere to hide
A 9 still needs bonding, the periodic table, energy changes, rates, equilibria, organic, analysis, and the atmosphere to contribute. You cannot specialise in moles and hope. The difference is order: make the quantitative core automatic so the applied topics have somewhere to sit, then close the topics a marked paper says you still leak. Timed papers, marked harshly
From a couple of months out, sit whole papers under time and mark them with the real scheme. A 9 is a number on that scheme, not a feeling after a good topic test. The last marks are often in the questions you almost finished. Practise starting those, not only the topics you already enjoy.
