How do I get a grade 9 in GCSE maths?
A grade 9 is designed to be rare - only a few per cent of GCSE maths entries reach it. What separates a 9 from an 8 is not secret content but total fluency: every standard technique automatic, plus the ability to solve unfamiliar, multi-step problems under time pressure. Build it by mastering every topic on the specification, then training on the hardest problem-solving questions against the clock.

What a grade 9 actually is
When GCSEs moved to number grades, the top of the scale was deliberately stretched: the old A and A* band was split into 7, 8 and 9 so the very strongest work could be told apart. A 9 sits above the old A* and only a small percentage of entries in each subject achieve it - that is the design, not a fluke of a hard year. So the first honest thing to say is that a 9 is a genuine summit, and an 8 is an outstanding grade that opens every door an A* ever did.
The second honest thing: a 9 is trainable. It is not reserved for a special kind of brain. Students who reach it have usually done two specific things - closed every gap on the specification, and practised the unfamiliar-problem style of question until it stopped feeling unfamiliar. Both of those are activities, not talents.
What separates an 8 from a 9
An 8 student knows every technique. A 9 student has made them automatic - expanding brackets, solving quadratics, working with surds or vectors happens without spending thought, which frees the whole mind for the actual problem. That fluency is what buys time and headroom on the hardest questions.
The other half is problem-solving. The last questions on a higher-tier paper rarely announce their topic: they hand you an unfamiliar situation and leave you to find the route - often through two or three topics chained together. The 9 is won by students who can start a question without knowing where it ends: try something, follow it, adjust. That comfort with not-knowing-yet is a skill, and it only grows through repeated attempts at questions hard enough to require it.
The training plan
Two phases, run in parallel once the first is mostly done:
- Audit the whole specification and be ruthless about gaps - a 9 leaves nowhere to hide, so every topic needs to be secure, not just familiar.
- Drill routine skills until they are fast and error-free. Speed on the easy marks is what buys minutes for the hard ones.
- Then live at the deep end: the final third of higher-tier past papers, and the multi-step, no-label problems. Struggle is the point - a question that beats you and then teaches you is worth ten you sailed through.
- Always work against a full solution afterwards, comparing method as well as answer. At this level the question is rarely "did I get it right?" and usually "was there a cleaner route?".
- From a couple of months out, do timed papers regularly and mark them with the real mark scheme, harshly.
Time is the hidden examiner
Plenty of students could earn a 9 given three hours; the exam gives you ninety minutes. The top boundary is usually high enough that there is little slack for unfinished papers, so pace is part of the grade: the routine questions need to take barely a thought, and the hard ones need a disciplined start-follow-adjust rhythm rather than a long stare. Practising under real timing is not an optional extra at this level - it is where the last few marks live.
One caution to hold alongside the ambition: an 8 that arrives with your sanity intact beats a 9 chased at the cost of every other subject. Aim high, but let the whole results sheet matter.
