What's on the GCSE chemistry specification?

GCSE Chemistry is two written papers with no coursework. The content is the same shape across English boards: atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes, energy, rates, organic chemistry, analysis, the atmosphere and using resources. Calculations and required practicals are examined in the papers, not as a separate mark. Foundation and Higher share the topic list at different depth. Year 10 usually covers the first half; Year 11 the rest plus papers.

The topic list (AQA’s ten areas, which the others share)

Boards number chemistry differently, but they are examining the same national content. AQA (8462) is the version most students meet, so its ten areas make a usable map. Check your own PDF for the exact paper split.

Papers, tiers and the calculation half

AQA splits the ten areas cleanly: Paper 1 is topics 1–5, Paper 2 is topics 6–10. Each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, 50%. Edexcel (1CH0) and OCR use the same two-paper shape with their own grouping. There is no coursework. You are entered Foundation or Higher for both papers.

Chemistry is the science that hides a maths paper inside it. Moles, concentrations, reacting masses and percentage yield are procedures, not facts, and they turn up on both papers. If quantitative chemistry is the area you are avoiding, it is also the area that most reliably moves a grade once you practise it.

Year 10 chemistry and Year 11 chemistry

Schools do not all teach the topics in the same order, but a very common pattern is: Year 10 covers atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry and chemical changes (most of Paper 1), and Year 11 covers rates, organic, analysis, atmosphere and resources (Paper 2), then past papers. If you are in Year 10 and the content suddenly feels harder, that is often the jump into moles - which is a method you can drill, not a sign you have fallen behind the whole subject.

Year 11 is when the papers start to mix topics. A rates question that needs a balanced equation from Year 10 is normal, not a trick. The specification is the whole two-year course sitting in one exam season, so a short weekly pass over Year 10 topics through Year 11 is what stops Paper 1 from becoming a surprise.

Required practicals

AQA and Edexcel each list eight required or core practicals; OCR uses Practical Activity Groups. Typical work includes making salts, electrolysis, temperature changes, rates, chromatography and identifying ions. At least 15% of the qualification marks relate to practical knowledge. Revise each one as a method: variables, key steps, what the results would show, and how you would improve it.
