What GCSEs do you need to become a vet?

The GCSE baseline

Vet schools name the sciences, maths and English in their requirements, generally in the grade 5 to 7 range depending on the school. Combined Science is accepted at most, and the whole certificate matters in the same soft way it does for medicine: entry is competitive enough that strong grades everywhere help. Nothing else on the options form is required - a student without GCSE geography or business becomes a vet exactly as easily.

The two gates that decide entry

The first is academic: A-level chemistry and biology, with offers typically at AAA or just below. The second is experience, and it carries more weight here than in almost any other degree - vet schools want evidence you understand the working reality of the job, which means time spent with animals in real settings. Farms, kennels, stables, rescue centres and lambing seasons all count, and they are easier to arrange than practice placements. Start collecting that experience gently from Year 10 and it accumulates into exactly what an application needs.

Gateway years exist here too, for strong candidates whose school circumstances kept grades down. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons lists every accredited degree, which is the definitive version of "which universities can make me a vet".

Keep the sciences strong, protect maths and English, and let the rest of your options follow what you will do well in. If the ambition is real, one afternoon a month around animals does more for a future application than any amount of worrying about grade boundaries - and it also answers the more important question of whether you actually want the job.
