Choosing subjects & tiers
What GCSEs do you need to study psychology?
No specific GCSE subjects are required to study psychology - not even GCSE or A-level psychology. The one grade that quietly matters is maths, because psychology degrees are full of statistics and universities commonly ask for GCSE maths at grade 4 or 5 upwards. Becoming a psychologist means a degree accredited by the British Psychological Society followed by postgraduate training in your chosen field. Strong grades generally, with maths and a science solid, keep every version open.

The surprise requirement is maths
Students picture psychology as an essay subject and discover at university that it is a science degree with a statistics spine - research methods and data analysis run through every year. Universities know this, which is why GCSE maths is the grade their entry requirements mention, typically at grade 4, 5 or 6 depending on the course. English matters in the usual way (it is a heavy reading and writing degree), and a science GCSE supports the biology and research content.
A-level psychology is a fine way to find out if you like the subject, and it is not required for the degree. Universities say so themselves - a mix like biology, maths and an essay subject is just as strong a preparation.
The road to actually being a psychologist
The title takes longer than the degree. Clinical, educational, forensic and occupational psychologists all complete an undergraduate degree accredited by the British Psychological Society, then postgraduate training in their specialism - for clinical psychology, a funded doctorate with competitive entry and usually some years of assistant or research experience first. Plenty of psychology graduates go elsewhere instead, into HR, marketing, teaching, data and health roles, which is part of why it is such a popular degree.
What this means for Years 10 and 11
Keep maths solid - grade 5 or above removes it as a question on every psychology course page you will ever read. Keep a science strong, keep English strong, and otherwise choose options you will enjoy and score well in. Nothing about this career needs deciding before sixth form; it just needs the doors left open, and those three grades hold them.
