What GCSEs do you need to become an engineer?
Maths is the one GCSE engineering genuinely runs on. Degree routes want A-level maths, usually with physics, so strong GCSE grades in maths and science (combined or triple) are what keep those open - grade 6 upwards makes A-level maths comfortable. Engineering apprenticeships typically ask for around five GCSEs at grade 4 or 5 including maths, English and often science. Design and technology helps you find out if you enjoy it; no engineer route requires it.

Maths first, then science
Every branch of engineering - civil, mechanical, electrical, aerospace, software - stands on maths, so your maths grade is the one that shapes what happens next. A grade 6 or above makes A-level maths a comfortable step rather than a cliff, and A-level maths is the requirement nearly every engineering degree names, usually with physics alongside. At GCSE, Combined Science covers the physics content the next stage builds on; triple science is nice to have, not a requirement.
Design and technology, computing and electronics are useful for discovering whether you enjoy making things work - which matters - but no engineering route requires them at GCSE. A student with maths, science and English can reach every branch of the profession.
Two routes, both respectable
The degree route runs through A-level maths (and usually physics) to an engineering degree, and on to professional registration. The apprenticeship route starts straight from school: advanced apprenticeships generally ask for around five GCSEs at grade 4 or 5 including maths and English, degree apprenticeships ask for A-levels and pay you while you earn the same degree. Employers in engineering take the apprenticeship route seriously - it leads to the same chartered status through the Engineering Council - so the choice is about how you want to spend ages 16 to 22, not about status.
What to do in Years 10 and 11
Push the maths grade as high as it will go - it is the single number that widens or narrows everything downstream. Keep science solid, and if you can, build or fix something real: a bike, a circuit, a game, anything. Admissions tutors and apprenticeship employers both light up at evidence you engineer for fun, and it costs nothing but a Saturday.
