What GCSEs do you need to become a teacher?
Teaching has one of the few genuine GCSE requirements: to start teacher training in England you need at least grade 4 in English and maths, and for primary teaching a science too. Everything else is open - your degree subject shapes what you teach at secondary, and training providers can accept equivalency tests if a grade is missing. The route is a degree followed by teacher training leading to qualified teacher status.

The requirement, exactly
The Department for Education sets the floor: GCSE grade 4 or above in English and maths for any teacher training in England, plus a science subject at grade 4 for primary. These are checked at the point you apply for training, years from now - and if one is missing then, providers can offer equivalency tests, so a Year 11 result never permanently closes the door. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland run their own systems with similar English-and-maths baselines.
How the route actually runs
Teachers qualify through a degree plus training that leads to qualified teacher status - either a university course with placements or a school-based route, and undergraduate degrees with QTS built in exist too. For secondary teaching, your degree subject becomes your teaching subject, so the GCSE choices that matter most are the ones that lead towards A-levels and a degree in something you would happily spend a career explaining. Shortage subjects such as maths, physics, chemistry, computing and languages carry tax-free training bursaries, which is worth knowing before you write off the harder option.
If English or maths is the wobbly one
Grade 4 in English and maths is the whole GCSE gate, so if either is at risk it deserves your revision time now - a pass banked in Year 11 beats an equivalency test at 21. And if you miss it this summer, resits exist for exactly this: schools and colleges run them as standard, and a resat 4 counts identically forever.
