What GCSEs do you need to become a dentist?
Dental schools look for strong GCSEs in the sciences, English and maths - grade 6 or above is the common expectation, and several schools consider your wider GCSE profile too. The decisive requirements come at sixth form: A-level chemistry and biology at high grades, the UCAT admissions test and an interview. Combined Science is accepted by most dental schools. What dental schools look at from GCSE
Dentistry sits alongside medicine in the small group of degrees that read your GCSE certificate. Sciences, English and maths are the subjects that get named, with grade 6 the usual working bar - and because entry is competitive, a strong set of grades across the board quietly strengthens an application even where nothing specific is required. Combined Science keeps the door open at most schools; where triple science is preferred, the school says so in its published requirements.
The gates that actually decide it
The selection happens at the next stage. Nearly every dental school asks for A-level chemistry and biology, with offers around AAA, plus the UCAT admissions test and an interview. Work experience helps, and it does not need to be in a dental surgery - anything involving responsibility with people demonstrates the same things. As with medicine, gateway programmes exist for capable applicants whose grades do not tell the whole story.
Dentistry is a five-year degree followed by foundation training, and the profession is regulated by the General Dental Council. That length is worth knowing early - not to be daunted by, but because it makes the calm version of the plan obvious: keep science options open now, decide properly at A-level.
The plan from Year 10
Prioritise the sciences, English and maths, and treat grade 6 as the target that keeps everything comfortable. If dentistry stays on your list into Year 11, look up two or three dental schools' actual entry pages - it takes minutes, and it replaces corridor folklore with the real numbers your plan should aim at.
