The dictionary form, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Make the dictionary form from the ます form

Group 2 verbs swap ます for る: 見ます, 見る. Group 1 verbs move the sound before ます to the う row: 泳ぎます, 泳ぐ; 持ちます, 持つ. します becomes する and 来ます becomes 来る.

  2. Say before doing with 前に

Dictionary form plus 前に means before doing: ねる前に 歯はを みがきます. The verb stays in the dictionary form even about the past: 出かける前に 電話しました. With a noun, use の前に: しけんの 前に.

  3. Say what you intend with つもりです

Dictionary form plus つもりです means I intend to, or I'm planning to: 夏休みに アルバイトを する つもりです. For not planning to, use the nai-form: 行かない つもりです. It is about your own decision.

  4. Say what is arranged with よていです

Dictionary form plus よていです means is scheduled to, for a fixed plan: しあいは 三時に はじまる よていです, 来週 おばあさんが 来る よていです. Use つもり for your own intention and よてい for something already arranged.

  5. Say what you can do with ことができます

Dictionary form plus ことができます means can: ピアノを ひく ことが できます, 日本語を 話す ことが できます. The negative is ことが できません. With a noun, が できます is enough: 日本語が できます.

  6. Say what you like doing with ことが好きです

Dictionary form plus ことが好きです means I like doing: えを かく ことが 好きです, うたを うたう ことが 大好きです. Use ことが きらいです for what you don't like doing.

Common mistakes in The dictionary form

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Inventing a する verb that doesn't exist, such as 話する for speak.

話す already ends in す, so it needs no する: 日本語を 話す ことが できます. Only nouns such as 勉強 take する: 勉強する.

  • Using the ta-form before 前に, as in ねた前に.

前に always follows the dictionary form, even in the past: ねる前に 本を 読みました.

  • Putting the ます form before つもり, as in 行きます つもりです.

つもり follows the dictionary form, never the ます form: 行く つもりです.

  • Using を with 好き, as in 読む ことを 好きです.

好き takes が: 読む ことが 好きです, ねこが 好きです.

  • Leaving out こと, as in 書くが できます.

A verb needs こと before が できます: 書く ことが できます.
