Writing about a photo, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Know the task

Foundation Question 1 asks you to describe a photo and give your opinions in about 20 to 30 words, for 12 marks: 6 for communication and content and 6 for linguistic knowledge and accuracy. The instructions are in Gujarati, and the question title is in English.

  2. Say what is in the photo

ફોટામાં એક બજાર છે there is a market in the photo; લોકો ફળ ખરીદી રહ્યા છે people are buying fruit; હવામાન સરસ છે the weather is nice.

  3. Give your opinion

    મને બજારમાં જવું ગમે છે, મારા મતે આ જગ્યા સુંદર છે, મને લાગે છે કે .... An opinion with કારણ કે shows more than a description.

  4. Write simple sentences you are sure of

Short, accurate sentences on words you know score better than long ones with mistakes. Link two or three with અને, પણ and કારણ કે.

  5. Know that the word count is a guide

You are not penalised for writing a little more or less than 20 to 30 words. Aim for four or five complete sentences.

Common mistakes in Writing about a photo

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Listing nouns: બજાર, ફળ, લોકો.

Make full sentences with a verb: બજારમાં ઘણાં ફળ છે.

  • Forgetting to give an opinion.

    The task asks for one. Add a sentence such as મને આ ફોટો ગમે છે કારણ કે ....

  • Writing in English or romanised Gujarati.

Only Gujarati script earns marks. Use a word you know rather than an English one.
