Negatives, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Use nicht to make a verb or an adjective negative

Ich schwimme nicht, Das ist nicht teuer, Ich gehe heute nicht ins Kino. Nicht goes before an adjective, a place phrase or a second verb at the end.

  2. Use kein with a noun

Kein means not a, not any or no, and takes the endings of ein: Ich habe keinen Hund, Es gibt keine Bäckerei, Ich habe keine Zeit. Use nicht with der-words and names: Ich mag den Film nicht.

  3. Use nie and nichts

Nie means never and nichts means nothing: Ich esse nie Fleisch, Ich habe nichts gekauft. German uses one negative in a clause: Ich habe nichts gesehen, never with nicht as well.

  4. Use nicht mehr and noch nicht

Nicht mehr is no longer: Ich wohne nicht mehr in London. Noch nicht is not yet: Ich bin noch nicht fertig. Kein ... mehr is no more: Ich habe kein Geld mehr.

  5. Say not ... but with nicht ... sondernHigher only

After a negative, but rather is sondern: Ich fahre nicht mit dem Bus, sondern mit dem Rad. Nicht can negate one element of the sentence, not the whole: Nicht ich habe das gesagt, sondern er.

Negatives key terms

The words the specification and the mark schemes use, each defined the way an examiner wants it.

nicht
Not, for a verb, an adjective or a phrase: Das ist nicht gut.
kein
Not a or no, for a noun, with the endings of ein: kein Problem.
nie
Never, as in Ich trinke nie Kaffee, I never drink coffee.
nichts
Nothing, as in Ich weiß nichts, I know nothing.
sondern
But rather, after a negative: nicht heute, sondern morgen.

Common mistakes in Negatives

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Writing nicht ein for not a, as in Ich habe nicht einen Bruder.

Not a is kein: Ich habe keinen Bruder.

  • Doubling the negative, as in Ich habe nicht nichts gemacht.

One negative is enough: Ich habe nichts gemacht.

  • Using aber after a negative to correct, as in nicht heute, aber morgen.

To correct a negative, use sondern: nicht heute, sondern morgen.

  • Putting nicht straight after the subject, as in Ich nicht spiele.

The verb comes second, and nicht after it: Ich spiele nicht.
