Verb patterns, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Use a verb with its object, and know the verbs that carry their own

Most actions are a verb and an object: 我wǒ看kàn书shū, 她tā喝hē茶chá, 他们tāmen打dǎ篮球lánqiú. Some everyday verbs have their object built in: 唱歌chànggē (sing, literally sing songs), 跳舞tiàowǔ (dance), 睡觉shuìjiào (sleep), 上网shàngwǎng (go online). They need nothing after them, 我wǒ喜欢xǐhuan唱歌chànggē; to name what you sing, swap in your own object: 我wǒ喜欢xǐhuan唱chàng中文Zhōngwén歌gē。

  2. Say not with the verb and its object

Put 不bù or 没méi before the verb and keep the object after it: 我wǒ不bù喝hē咖啡kāfēi。 我wǒ没méi看kàn电视diànshì。 The verb itself stays the same whoever does the action.

  3. Say where you are going and why: 去qù, the place, then the verb

To go somewhere to do something, put the place after 去qù and the purpose after the place: 我wǒ去qù商店shāngdiàn买mǎi东西dōngxi。 (I'm going to the shop to buy things.) 来lái works the same way: 来lái我wǒ家jiā玩wán吧ba! How you travel goes before 去qù: 我wǒ坐zuò公共汽车gōnggòng qìchē去qù学校xuéxiào。

  4. Ask politely with 请qǐng

请qǐng before a verb means please: 请qǐng坐zuò。 请qǐng进jìn。 请qǐng等一下děng yīxià。 请问qǐngwèn (may I ask) opens a polite question to a stranger: 请问qǐngwèn,图书馆túshūguǎn在zài哪儿nǎr? 请qǐng can also mean invite or treat: 我wǒ请qǐng你nǐ喝hē咖啡kāfēi。 (The coffee's on me.)

  5. Say what you like doing with 喜欢xǐhuan and 爱ài

喜欢xǐhuan (like) and 爱ài (love) can go straight before another verb: 我wǒ喜欢xǐhuan看kàn电影diànyǐng。 我wǒ爱ài吃chī饺子jiǎozi。 Add 最zuì for a favourite, 我wǒ最zuì喜欢xǐhuan踢tī足球zúqiú。, and 不bù for a dislike: 我wǒ不bù喜欢xǐhuan跑步pǎobù。

  6. Double a verb to make it gentle or briefHigher only

Saying a verb twice makes it a little, a quick go: 看kàn看kàn (have a look), 试试shìshi (have a try), 休息xiūxi休息xiūxi (rest a bit). A one-syllable verb can take 一yī in the middle: 看kàn一yī看kàn. It softens a request: 我wǒ可以kěyǐ试试shìshi吗ma?

  7. Use 给gěi for giving, and for doing something for someoneHigher only

给gěi on its own is give: 妈妈māma给gěi我wǒ一yī本běn书shū。 Before a person and a verb it means to or for: 我wǒ给gěi奶奶nǎinai打dǎ电话diànhuà。 (I phone my grandma.) 我wǒ给gěi你nǐ写xiě信xìn。 (I'll write to you.)

  8. Pass on what you heard with 听说tīngshuō and 说shuōHigher only

听说tīngshuō means I hear that, or people say: 听说tīngshuō明天míngtiān会huì下xià雨yǔ。 To pass on someone's words, name them and add 说shuō: 妈妈māma说shuō我wǒ应该yīnggāi早zǎo点儿diǎnr睡觉shuìjiào。 (Mum says I should go to bed earlier.)

  9. Say yourself and your own with 自己zìjǐHigher only

自己zìjǐ means oneself, or by oneself: 我wǒ自己zìjǐ做饭zuòfàn。 (I cook for myself.) 你nǐ自己zìjǐ去qù吧ba。 (Go on your own.) 自己zìjǐ的de is your own: 我wǒ有yǒu自己zìjǐ的de卧室wòshì。 (I have my own bedroom.)

Common mistakes in Verb patterns

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Adding a second object to a verb-object word, as in 我wǒ唱歌chànggē中文Zhōngwén歌gē.

Swap the built-in object for yours: 我wǒ唱chàng中文Zhōngwén歌gē. On its own, 唱歌chànggē needs nothing after it.

  • Putting the purpose before the place, as in 我wǒ去qù买mǎi东西dōngxi商店shāngdiàn.

The place comes first, then what you do there: 我wǒ去qù商店shāngdiàn买mǎi东西dōngxi.

  • Putting how you travel at the end, as in 我wǒ去qù学校xuéxiào坐zuò公共汽车gōnggòng qìchē.

How you travel comes before 去qù and the place: 我wǒ坐zuò公共汽车gōnggòng qìchē去qù学校xuéxiào.

  • Putting 请qǐng at the end, as English puts please, as in 坐zuò请qǐng.

请qǐng always comes first, before the verb it softens: 请qǐng坐zuò, 请qǐng等一下děng yīxià.

  • Doubling a two-syllable verb one syllable at a time, as in 休xiū休息xiūxi息xi.Higher only

Double the whole verb: 休息xiūxi休息xiūxi. Only a one-syllable verb takes 一yī in the middle: 看kàn一yī看kàn.
