Complements after the verb, explained point by point
Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.
Show direction with 来 and 去 after a verb
来 after a verb means towards the speaker and 去 means away: 回来 (come back), 回去 (go back). At home on the phone, you ask 你什么时候回来?; to a friend who is leaving, 你什么时候回去?
Pair 上, 下, 进, 出 and 回 with 来 and 去
Five movement verbs pair with 来 and 去: 上来 (come up), 下去 (go down), 进去 (go in), 出来 (come out), 回来 (come back). 请进来! (Come in!) 我们出去吧。 (Let's go out.)
Use a direction with 了, and with a place
With 了, a direction says where someone has gone: 他回来了。 (He's back.) 她出去了。 (She's gone out.) A place goes before 来 or 去: 他回家去了。 老师进教室来了。
Add a result after the verbHigher only
A second word after a verb can say what the action achieved: 看见 (look and see), 听懂 (listen and understand), 找到 (look for and find), 学会 (learn and be able to). 看 is looking; 看见 is seeing.
Use 到 and 好 to show an action got where it was goingHigher only
到 means reached or managed: 我买到票了。 (I managed to get tickets.) 我找到我的手机了。 好 means done properly and ready: 晚饭做好了。 (Dinner's ready.) 我做好作业了。 (My homework's done.)
Make a result negative with 没Higher only
A result that didn't happen takes 没: 我没看见他。 (I didn't see him.) 我还没做好。 (I haven't finished yet.) It is never 不 here.
Say can or can't with 得 or 不 in the middleHigher only
Put 得 between the verb and its result for can, and 不 for can't: 看得见 (can see), 看不见 (can't see), 听得懂 (can understand), 听不懂 (can't understand). 老师说得太快,我听不懂。 Ask with 吗: 你听得懂吗?
Choose between 不能 and the can't formHigher only
The 不 form says the result can't be reached: 太远了,我看不见。 不能 usually means not allowed, or not possible for some other reason: 这儿不能吃东西。 Three worth knowing: 找不到 (can't find), 买不到 (can't get hold of), 看不懂 (can't make sense of something you read).
