Can, want and should, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Put a modal verb before the main verb

A modal verb, such as 会huì (can), 可以kěyǐ (may) or 应该yīnggāi (should), goes after the subject and before the main verb: 我wǒ会huì说shuō汉语Hànyǔ。 It never changes, never takes 了le, and is made negative with 不bù: 我wǒ不bù会huì游泳yóuyǒng。

  2. Say what you want with 想xiǎng and 要yào

想xiǎng is the softer one, would like to or feel like: 我wǒ想xiǎng喝hē水shuǐ。 要yào is firmer, want to or am going to: 我wǒ要yào买mǎi一yī本běn书shū。 Before a noun, 要yào means want: 我wǒ要yào这zhè个gè。 For not wanting to, say 不bù想xiǎng: 我wǒ不bù想xiǎng去qù。

  3. Say you can, having learned how, with 会huì

会huì is for skills you have learned: 我wǒ会huì游泳yóuyǒng。 她tā会huì说shuō汉语Hànyǔ。 It can also mean will, for something likely: 明天míngtiān会huì下xià雨yǔ。 (It will rain tomorrow.)

  4. Ask for and give permission with 可以kěyǐ

可以kěyǐ means may, or can because it is allowed: 我wǒ可以kěyǐ用yòng你nǐ的de笔bǐ吗ma? Say yes with 可以kěyǐ and no with 不bù可以kěyǐ. It also makes a suggestion: 我们wǒmen可以kěyǐ坐zuò公共汽车gōnggòng qìchē去qù。

  5. Give advice with 应该yīnggāi

应该yīnggāi means should: 你nǐ应该yīnggāi多duō喝hē水shuǐ。 It suits an opinion in speaking or writing, about health or about the world around you: 我们wǒmen应该yīnggāi多duō走路zǒulù,少shǎo开车kāichē。 (We should walk more and drive less.)

  6. Say you are able to with 能néngHigher only

能néng means able to, when it depends on the situation rather than a skill: 今天jīntiān我wǒ有yǒu很hěn多duō作业zuòyè,不bù能néng去qù看kàn电影diànyǐng。 (I've got lots of homework today, so I can't go to the cinema.) 你nǐ明天míngtiān能néng来lái吗ma?

  7. Say you must with 必须bìxū, 得děi and 一定yīdìng要yàoHigher only

必须bìxū is must, for rules: 我们wǒmen必须bìxū穿chuān校服xiàofú。 In speech, 得děi, said děi, means have to: 我wǒ得děi回huí家jiā了le。 一定yīdìng要yào means must, definitely: 你nǐ一定yīdìng要yào来lái! Their negative is 不用bùyòng or 不必bùbì: 你nǐ不用bùyòng来lái。

  8. Choose between 会huì, 能néng and 可以kěyǐHigher only

All three can be translated can. 会huì: you know how (我wǒ会huì游泳yóuyǒng). 能néng: you are able to right now (我wǒ今天jīntiān太tài累lèi了le,不bù能néng游泳yóuyǒng). 可以kěyǐ: you are allowed to (这儿zhèr可以kěyǐ游泳yóuyǒng吗ma?).

Common mistakes in Can, want and should

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Using 可以kěyǐ for a skill, as in 我wǒ可以kěyǐ说shuō汉语Hànyǔ for I can speak Chinese.

A learned skill takes 会huì: 我wǒ会huì说shuō汉语Hànyǔ. Keep 可以kěyǐ for permission, as in 我wǒ可以kěyǐ回huí家jiā吗ma, may I go home.

  • Putting 了le after a modal verb, as in 我wǒ想xiǎng了le去qù.

A modal verb never takes 了le: 我wǒ想xiǎng去qù. Any 了le goes after the main verb or at the end.

  • Saying 我wǒ不bù要yào去qù for I don't want to go.

不bù要yào sounds like a flat refusal or a command. For not wanting to, say 我wǒ不bù想xiǎng去qù.

  • Making 必须bìxū negative with 不bù, as in 你nǐ不bù必须bìxū来lái.Higher only

The negative of 必须bìxū is 不用bùyòng or 不必bùbì: 你nǐ不用bùyòng来lái.

  • Reading 得děi in 我wǒ得děi回huí家jiā了le as de.Higher only

Before a verb, 得děi is děi, have to. After a verb it is de, as in 说shuō得de很hěn好hǎo.
