How do I revise for GCSE Combined Science?

Revise Combined Science as three small subjects on rotation, not one big one. Short retrieval sessions - definitions, processes and equations recalled from memory, then checked - beat re-reading notes, and each science needs its own slot each week so none drifts. Three subjects wearing one name

Combined Science is biology, chemistry and physics in one qualification - which means the classic trap is revising it as a single blob and unconsciously spending every session on the science you like most. The fix is structural: rotate. Give each science its own short slot across the week, and keep a one-line log of when each was last touched. The science you avoid is nearly always the one holding the dual grade down, and rotation drags it back into the light without needing willpower.

Retrieval, not re-reading

Science rewards memory that works under pressure: definitions used precisely, processes recalled in order, equations produced on demand. Reading the revision guide feels like progress but files everything under "familiar" rather than "known". Close the book and pull it out instead - flashcards answered before flipping, processes written as numbered steps from memory, diagrams redrawn on a blank page. Marking your own recall honestly, gaps and all, is the whole method; the gaps are tomorrow's list.

For chemistry and physics, add the doing side: calculations practised like maths, with full working, until choosing and rearranging the equation is routine. A calculation you watched someone else do is not yet yours.

Required practicals are method questions in waiting

Every science carries a set of required practicals, and exam questions about them are predictable in shape: what was measured, what was controlled, why this step, what would improve it. You do not need to re-live the lesson - you need to be able to interrogate the method. For each practical your board lists, be able to state the variables, the key steps and the reason each step exists. That converts a mark-scheme staple from a lottery into banked marks.

Let questions steer the plan

From a few weeks out, topic-by-topic exam questions become the compass: they show you, faster than any self-assessment, which topics are secure and which need another session. Mark against the mark scheme and notice the difference between "knew it", "knew it but said it imprecisely" and "didn't know it" - the middle category is where science grades are quietly lost, and it is the cheapest to fix.
