How do I revise for GCSE biology?
GCSE biology carries the heaviest recall load of the three sciences, so retrieval practice is the method: test yourself on definitions and processes from memory, redraw the key diagrams until you can produce them unprompted, and learn required practicals as methods you understand rather than scripts you memorise. Then train the longer questions - command words decide what a four-to-six-mark answer must actually do.

Biology is a language before it is anything else
Of the three sciences, biology asks you to remember the most: a large technical vocabulary (osmosis, mitosis, homeostasis and their hundred cousins), and a long list of processes made of ordered steps. There is maths in biology, but far less than in chemistry or physics - the weight of the subject is accurate recall, deployed precisely. That makes the revision method unusually clear-cut: the techniques that build memory are the whole game, and the passive ones (re-reading, highlighting) are even less useful here than usual.
Precision matters as much as coverage. Biology mark schemes often want the term, not a paraphrase - "diffusion" where you wrote "spreading out", "partially permeable" where you wrote "lets some things through". So when you self-test definitions, mark yourself strictly: close is a prompt to test that card again sooner, not a pass. Flashcards, self-quizzing and blurting (write everything you know on a topic from memory, then check what you missed) are all excellent - the common engine is producing the words from memory rather than recognising them on a page.
Processes are sequences - learn them as stories with steps
A big share of biology is processes that unfold in order: how water moves, how a signal travels, how a substance is exchanged, how organisms respond. The exam tests whether you can reproduce the sequence - and often whether you can explain why each step happens. So revise processes as ordered chains, not clouds of facts: write the steps as a numbered list from memory, check, and re-test the step you dropped. Then push one level deeper by asking "why?" at each arrow - because the explain questions are where the sequence-with-reasons students pull away from the sequence-only students.
Link everything you can to the underlying principles. A surprising amount of GCSE biology is the same few ideas wearing different outfits - surface area to volume ratio, concentration gradients, enzymes and their conditions. Spotting that a new context is an old principle halves what you have to memorise and sets you up for the application questions, which love presenting a familiar idea in an unfamiliar organism.
Diagrams you can redraw from memory
Biology is a visual subject, and its exams reward students who can label, complete or interpret diagrams. The revision move is simple and slightly magical: don't study diagrams - reproduce them. Take a key diagram from your notes, study it for a minute, close the book, and redraw it with labels from memory. Compare, note what you missed, and redraw again in a few days. A diagram you can produce unprompted is knowledge you actually own, and the act of drawing forces you to notice structure that reading slides straight past.
Keep a shortlist of the diagrams your specification leans on - your class notes and revision guide make them obvious by repetition - and rotate through them across your revision weeks. Two or three redraws each is usually enough to make them permanent.
Required practicals: method, not memory
Your specification includes a set of required practicals, and questions about them appear on the papers - but they are not asking you to recite a script. They test whether you understood the method: what the independent, dependent and control variables were, why particular steps were done, what made it a fair test, and how you would improve it. So revise each practical (your board publishes the exact list) by interrogating it rather than memorising it: what was measured, what was changed, what was kept the same, why that step, what could go wrong. A student who understands one practical's logic can answer questions about a variation they have never seen - which is precisely what the papers like to set.
The long answers: let the command word drive
Biology's four-to-six-mark questions are where good knowledge goes to underperform, usually because the answer ignores the command word. "Describe" wants what happens; "explain" wants because after because; "compare" needs both things in every sentence; "evaluate" wants both sides and a judgement. Before writing, name the job the command word sets, and glance at the marks - a rough guide is one clear scientific point per mark. Then answer in the order the question asked. Practising a handful of these against mark schemes teaches you the register biology examiners want: short, precise, technical sentences that each earn something, rather than a paragraph of everything you know about the topic.
