What's on the GCSE Combined Science specification?

GCSE Combined Science is biology, chemistry and physics in one qualification worth two GCSEs. You sit six shorter papers - two per science - and receive a double grade on a 17-point scale, from 9-9 down to 1-1. The topics are the same areas as the separate sciences at less depth, and space physics is not included. There is no coursework. Foundation and Higher tiers apply across all six papers.

What you actually study: three sciences, trimmed

Combined Science covers the same topic areas as separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Biology runs from cell biology through to ecology; chemistry from atomic structure to using resources; physics from energy to magnetism. What changes is depth: each area drops the content flagged as separate-science-only, so a Combined student has meaningfully less to learn per science. The one whole topic that disappears is space physics - stars, red-shift and the Big Bang belong to separate Physics and cannot appear on your papers.

That trimming is exactly why revising from the wrong checklist wastes time. If your class is Combined, work from a Combined Science specification PDF, not a separate-science one - otherwise you will spend evenings on plant hormones or transformer calculations your exam is not allowed to ask.

Six papers, one entry, two grades

On AQA Trilogy (8464), the most-entered version, you sit six papers of 1 hour 15 minutes and 70 marks: Biology 1 and 2, Chemistry 1 and 2, Physics 1 and 2, each worth one sixth of the qualification. Edexcel (1SC0) and OCR Gateway (J250) use the same six-paper shape. You are entered for one tier across all six - there is no mixing Foundation chemistry with Higher biology.

The marks from all six papers are added together and turned into one double grade: 9-9 at the top, then 9-8, 8-8 and so on down to 1-1. The two numbers are one award, not a science-by-science verdict - a 4-3 does not tell you which science was the 3. Foundation tier can award up to 5-5. Required practicals across all three sciences

Combined Science carries a slightly shortened practical list - on AQA it is 16 required practicals rather than the 28 a triple student meets across three separate GCSEs. Microscopy, osmosis, making salts, rates of reaction, resistance and waves all survive the cut. As with every science GCSE, the practicals are examined by questions inside the written papers, not by a write-up: the exam wants your variables, your measurements and your improvements, not a memorised script.

Combined or triple - and can you switch?

Combined Science is the standard route, taken by roughly three quarters of GCSE students, and it keeps every post-16 science door open in principle - sixth forms routinely accept a strong Combined result for A-level sciences, though some ask for a 6-6 or better, so check the ones you care about. Triple gives more depth and three separate grades in exchange for more curriculum time. Schools decide the split, usually at the end of Year 9 or during Year 10; switching later is a school-level conversation, and moving from triple down to Combined is far more common than the reverse.
