Adjectives and adverbs, explained point by point
Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.
Tell the two kinds of adjective apart
い-adjectives end in い: たかい, おもしろい, 大きい. な-adjectives take な before a noun: しずかな, ゆうめいな, すきな. A few な-adjectives happen to end in an い sound, so learn きれい and きらい as な-adjectives.
Put an adjective in front of a noun
Adjectives go before the noun they describe. An い-adjective goes straight in: 大きい 犬, たかい 山. A な-adjective adds な: しずかな 町, きれいな 川.
End a sentence with an adjective, in the present and the past
Add です to make a polite sentence: この ケーキは おいしいです, 町は しずかです. For the past, an い-adjective swaps its last い for かった (おいしかったです), while a な-adjective uses でした (しずかでした). いい is the odd one out: its past is よかったです.
Join two adjectives with くて and で
To say two things about something, change the first adjective. An い-adjective swaps い for くて (やすくて おいしいです), and いい becomes よくて. A な-adjective adds で: しんせつで おもしろいです.
Use adverbs to say how often and how much
よく (often) and ときどき (sometimes) go with a positive verb: よく えいがを 見ます. あまり (not much) and ぜんぜん (not at all) need a negative: あまり 見ません, ぜんぜん 見ません. For how much, use とても or たいへん (very), すこし or ちょっと (a little) and たくさん (a lot): とても 大きいです, たくさん 食べました.
Make adjectives negativeHigher only
An い-adjective swaps い for くないです or くありません: 高くないです. Its past negative is くなかったです, and いい becomes よくないです. A な-adjective uses じゃありません and じゃありませんでした: 有名じゃありません. With friends, drop です: 高くない, 有名じゃない.
Turn adjectives into adverbs, and say how things changeHigher only
An い-adjective swaps い for く to describe an action (はやく 帰ります), and a な-adjective adds に (きれいに 書きます). With なります they say what something becomes: さむく なりました, 上手に なりました. With します they say what you make it: 部屋を きれいに します.
Use もう and まだHigher only
もう means already: もう しゅくだいを しました. まだ means still, or not yet with a negative: まだ 十五才です, まだ 食べていません. To answer もう 食べましたか。 with no, say いいえ、 まだです。

Common mistakes in Adjectives and adverbs
The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.
Putting でした after an い-adjective, as in たのしいでした, or saying いかったです for was good.
An い-adjective carries its own past: たのしかったです. いい changes to よかったです. Only な-adjectives and nouns take でした.
Giving a な-adjective the endings of an い-adjective, as in きれかったです or しずかくて.
きれい and しずか are な-adjectives: きれいでした, しずかで. Check which kind a word is when you learn it.
Leaving out な before a noun, or adding it to an い-adjective: しずか 町, たかいな 山.
Only な-adjectives take な before a noun: しずかな 町, but たかい 山.
Using あまり or ぜんぜん with a positive verb, as in あまり 見ます.
Both need a negative ending: あまり 見ません, ぜんぜん わかりません. For often, use よく.
Making an い-adjective negative with じゃありません, as in 高いじゃありません.Higher only
い-adjectives change their own ending: 高くないです or 高くありません. じゃありません is for な-adjectives and nouns.
