Reading: questions in Gujarati, explained point by point

Everything the GCSE specification expects you to be able to do, and how to actually do it - the same lesson a signed-in student studies from.

  1. Know the section set in Gujarati

Section B has three questions where the questions and instructions are in Gujarati. At Foundation all three are answered by choosing; at Higher two are, and one needs a short answer written in Gujarati. The subject content asks for between three tenths and two fifths of the reading marks to come from questions set in the language.

  2. Fill gaps from a box using grammar as well as meaning

A gap-fill gives a box of Gujarati words. The sentence often shows what kind of word fits: after મારો a masculine noun, before છે an adjective or a noun, after ગઈકાલે a past form.

  3. Read the question words carefully

    કોણ, ક્યાં, ક્યારે, કેમ, શું and કેટલા each ask for a different kind of answer. કેમ wants a reason, often after કારણ કે in the text.

  4. Write a short Gujarati answer at Higher

Answer in a few accurate words, lifting the words you need from the text and changing their form to fit: a question asking તે ક્યાં ગઈ? is answered મુંબઈ or તે મુંબઈ ગઈ.

  5. Look for the same idea in different words

The question may say ખુશ where the text says આનંદમાં, or શરૂ થાય છે where it says ચાલુ થાય છે.

Common mistakes in Reading: questions in Gujarati

The slips that cost marks year after year, and what to do instead.

  • Choosing a word for the gap by meaning alone.

Check that it fits the grammar: gender, number and tense must match the sentence.

  • Copying a whole sentence from the text as a Higher answer.

Give only what answers the question, in a few accurate words.

  • Answering a કેમ question with a place or a time.

કેમ asks why. Look for the reason, often after કારણ કે.
