  1. Explain how ecosystems work - interdependence, food webs and nutrient cycling

    An ecosystem links living things (plants, animals, decomposers) with their environment (soil, water, climate), and everything depends on everything else - that is interdependence. Energy flows from producers up through consumers; decomposers return nutrients to the soil. The key exam idea: change one component and the effects ripple - remove a predator from a pond food web and its prey booms, then overgrazes. Small-scale UK examples like a pond or hedgerow are perfect here.

  2. Describe how plants and animals adapt to the tropical rainforest

    Rainforests are hot, wet and fiercely competitive for light, and everything is shaped by that: emergent trees tower above the canopy, drip-tip leaves shed water, buttress roots steady shallow-rooted giants, and lianas climb rather than build trunks. Animals adapt too - sloths camouflaged in the canopy, monkeys with gripping tails. Always link the adaptation to the condition it solves; the link is what earns the mark.

  3. Explain the causes and impacts of deforestation, using a rainforest case study

    For a case study like the Amazon, know the causes with examples: cattle ranching and soy farming, logging, mining, road building and settlement. Impacts split into environmental (soil erosion, less evapotranspiration so a drier climate, carbon released) and economic (jobs and income now, lost resources later). The strongest answers show the tension - deforestation is profitable in the short term, which is exactly why it is hard to stop.

  4. Evaluate strategies for managing the rainforest sustainably

    Sustainable management tries to keep the forest working while people still earn a living: selective logging and replanting, ecotourism, international agreements on hardwoods, debt-for-nature swaps where debt is cancelled in return for conservation. For each strategy, be ready to say how it works AND a limitation - ecotourism brings income but only to accessible areas. That balanced evaluation is what "assess" and "evaluate" questions want.

  5. Describe how plants, animals and people adapt to hot desert environments

    Deserts pair extreme heat with scarce water, and life adapts around water: cacti store it and defend it with spines, roots spread wide or dive deep, camels manage days without drinking, and many animals simply avoid the day by being nocturnal. For a case study like the Thar or Western Desert, know how people live there too - irrigation, oasis farming, and increasingly solar energy.

  6. Explain the opportunities and challenges of development in hot deserts, and the risk of desertification

    Deserts offer real opportunities - mineral extraction, solar farms, tourism, irrigated farming - but development fights extreme heat, water shortage and poor accessibility. On desert fringes, overgrazing, over-cultivation and climate change degrade land into desert: desertification. Management works with modest, local fixes: water storage, tree planting to anchor soil, appropriate technology like drip irrigation. Pair each opportunity or fix with the challenge it answers.
