GCSE Business specification

GCSE Business introduces students to how businesses are started, run and grown, covering enterprise, marketing, operations, finance, human resources and the external influences (economic, ethical, technological and global) that shape decisions. It builds commercial awareness, decision-making and quantitative skills applied to real and stimulus-based business contexts.

How it's assessed
Untiered, linear (single tier of entry, all assessment at the end of the course) across all boards.

Assessed entirely by two written exam papers (no NEA/coursework). Across boards papers are typically 1h30-1h45 (Eduqas has a longer 2-hour Component 1), use a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended/case-study response, and require quantitative skills (interpreting and calculating from business data) worth roughly 10% of marks. Calculators are permitted.

High-level topics

The main areas of content and what a student is expected to know and do.

Enterprise, entrepreneurship and business in the real world

The purpose and nature of business activity, why and how business ideas and new enterprises come about, risk and reward, the role of the entrepreneur, business aims/objectives, ownership structures (sole trader, partnership, limited company) and stakeholders.

Marketing

Identifying and understanding customers, market research and segmentation, the marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion) and how businesses build and adapt their offer to compete.

Business operations and production

Methods of production, managing quality, the supply chain and procurement, the role of stock control and technology, and how operations decisions affect efficiency, costs and customer service.

Finance and financial decision-making

Sources of finance, cash flow and forecasting, revenue, costs, profit and break-even, and the interpretation and calculation of financial information to support business decisions.

Human resources and people

Organisational structures, recruitment and selection, motivation, training and development, and effective communication; how businesses manage and develop staff as they grow.

Influences on business

How technology, ethics, the environment, legislation, the economic climate (interest rates, exchange rates, unemployment, inflation) and globalisation affect business decisions and performance.

Growth and the changing business environment

How a business develops beyond start-up, methods and impacts of growth, the interdependent nature of business functions, and operating in national and international/global markets.

Quantitative and analytical skills

Performing business calculations (break-even, cash flow, profit, ratios, percentages, averages) and interpreting charts and data, assessed across both papers in every specification.

AQA
Spec 8132

AQA GCSE Business

Papers & assessment

2 papers, each 1h45 and 90 marks, each 50%. Paper 1: Influences of operations and HRM on business activity; Paper 2: Influences of marketing and finance on business activity. Both papers assess the whole specification through multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended-response questions, including a case-study context. Untiered, no NEA.

What's distinctive

Organises the same six content areas (business in the real world, influences on business, operations, HR, marketing, finance) but splits the two papers by business function (operations+HR vs marketing+finance) rather than by stage of business growth.

Papers & assessment

2 papers, each 1h30 and 90 marks, each 50%. Paper 1 (1BS0/01): Investigating small business (Theme 1); Paper 2 (1BS0/02): Building a business (Theme 2). Each paper has calculations, multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-writing questions. Untiered, no NEA; calculators allowed.

What's distinctive

Structured around two themes by stage of the business journey: Theme 1 covers enterprise and small-business start-up, Theme 2 covers a business growing beyond start-up. The paper split mirrors this small-business vs growing-business progression.

OCR
Spec J204

OCR GCSE (9-1) Business

Papers & assessment

2 components, each 1h30 and 80 marks (160 total), each 50%. J204/01: Business 1 - business activity, marketing and people; J204/02: Business 2 - operations, finance and influences on business. Both taken for the award. Untiered, no NEA.

What's distinctive

Splits content across the two papers by topic cluster (activity/marketing/people vs operations/finance/influences) and uses an 80-mark/1h30 format rather than AQA's 90-mark/1h45 papers; emphasises the interdependent nature of business.

Eduqas
Spec C510QS

WJEC Eduqas GCSE (9-1) Business

Papers & assessment

2 components, unequal weighting. Component 1: Business Dynamics, 2 hours, 100 marks, 62.5% - short-answer and structured questions on stimulus material covering the full syllabus. Component 2: Business Considerations, 1h30, 60 marks, 37.5% - data-response questions. Untiered, no NEA; quantitative skills at least 10% of marks, calculators allowed in both papers.

What's distinctive

The only board with unequally weighted papers (62.5% / 37.5%) and a longer 2-hour first paper. Eduqas (English-medium) is sat across England and Wales; WJEC offers the parallel Welsh-medium provision. Explicit emphasis on globalisation, digital marketing, supply-chain management and international trade.

How the boards differ

All four boards offer an untiered, linear GCSE Business assessed by two written exams with no coursework, sharing the same core content (enterprise, marketing, operations, finance, HR and external influences) and a quantitative-skills requirement worth around 10% of marks. The main differences are structural. AQA (8132) uses two equal 1h45/90-mark papers split by business function (operations+HR vs marketing+finance). Edexcel (1BS0) uses two equal 1h30/90-mark papers split by stage of the business journey (investigating a small business vs building/growing a business). OCR (J204) uses two equal 1h30/80-mark components split by topic cluster (activity/marketing/people vs operations/finance/influences). Eduqas/WJEC (C510QS) is the outlier: unequally weighted papers (a 2-hour, 100-mark Component 1 worth 62.5% plus a 1h30, 60-mark Component 2 worth 37.5%), with WJEC providing Welsh-medium delivery. For students and parents, the choice mainly affects exam timing and how content is grouped across the two papers rather than the underlying syllabus.
