GCSE Biology specification

GCSE Biology (single science) is the study of living organisms and life processes - from cells and the human body to genetics, evolution and ecosystems. Taken as a standalone qualification (alongside separate Chemistry and Physics for 'triple science'), it goes deeper than the Biology content within Combined Science and builds toward A-level Biology and the wider life sciences.

How it's assessed
Tiered (Foundation/Higher), linear - all exams taken at the end of the course, with candidates entered for a single tier across both papers. This is consistent across all boards.

Assessed entirely by external written exams - two papers of equal weight (each 50%), most commonly 1h45 long. There is no NEA or coursework. Practical work is mandatory and instead assessed within the written papers: candidates must carry out a set of required/core practical activities, knowledge and analysis of which are examined in the exams. Papers mix multiple-choice, structured short-answer, data-response and extended (e.g. 6-mark) questions; calculators are permitted.

High-level topics

The main areas of content and what a student is expected to know and do.

Cell biology

Cell structure (prokaryotic vs eukaryotic, animal and plant cells), microscopy and magnification, cell division by mitosis and the cell cycle, stem cells, and transport in and out of cells (diffusion, osmosis, active transport).

Organisation and the digestive system

Levels of organisation (cells, tissues, organs, systems), enzymes and digestion, the human circulatory and respiratory systems, the heart and blood vessels, health and non-communicable disease, and transport systems in plants.

Infection and response

Communicable diseases and pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists), how disease spreads and is prevented, the human defence and immune systems, vaccination, and the discovery and development of new drugs and medicines.

Bioenergetics

Photosynthesis (the reaction, limiting factors and uses of glucose) and respiration (aerobic and anaerobic respiration in plants and animals, metabolism and the response to exercise).

Homeostasis and response

Maintaining a constant internal environment: the nervous system and reflexes, the endocrine/hormonal system, control of blood glucose and diabetes, water and nitrogen balance (the kidneys), hormones in human reproduction and contraception, and plant hormones.

Inheritance, variation and evolution

Sexual and asexual reproduction, DNA and the genome, genetic inheritance and inherited disorders, variation and mutation, evolution by natural selection, selective breeding, genetic engineering, classification and the evidence for evolution (fossils, extinction).

Ecology

Adaptations, interdependence and competition, organisation of ecosystems and food chains, the carbon and water cycles, biodiversity and the impact of human activity on the environment, and (in some boards) the maintenance of biodiversity and food security.

Required / core practical skills

A set of mandatory practical activities (e.g. microscopy, osmosis, enzyme action, food tests, photosynthesis, microbiology, reaction times, sampling/quadrats) developing apparatus, measurement and data-analysis skills. Not separately examined - assessed through questions in the written papers.

Paper 1 covers topics 1–4 (Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; Bioenergetics); Paper 2 covers topics 5–7 (Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; Ecology).

What's distinctive

Content is organised into seven numbered topics split cleanly across the two papers. Defines 10 required practicals (the most prescriptive count among the boards) and includes a maths/quantitative skills requirement. Widely the most-entered Biology specification.

Organises content into nine numbered topics (1–9) with 'Key concepts in biology' (Topic 1) examinable across both papers. Specifies 8 core practicals rather than AQA's 10. Issue 4 (March 2024) is the current version.

What's distinctive

OCR offers two distinct Biology suites; this is the 'Gateway Science' (A) suite, a more conventional, content-led course. Content is grouped into six topics - B1 Cell-level systems, B2 Scaling up, B3 Organism-level systems, B4 Community-level systems, B5 Genes/inheritance and selection, B6 Global challenges - plus B7 Practical skills.

What's distinctive

OCR's second, distinct Biology suite - the 'Twenty First Century Science' (B) suite developed with the University of York Science Education Group, with a context-led, 'science explanations / ideas about science' pedagogy. Chapters are themed (e.g. B1 You and your genes, B2 Keeping healthy, B3 Living together - food and ecosystems) rather than presented as a conventional topic sequence. A school chooses either J247 or J257, not both.

What's distinctive

Eduqas is the WJEC brand for the Ofqual-regulated qualification available in England. Questions are deliberately set in practical and novel contexts. Note: the Eduqas Biology specification covers nearly all of the same biology content but cannot be combined with separate Eduqas Chemistry/Physics into the Eduqas 'Double Award' route.

What's distinctive

This is the Qualifications Wales-regulated WJEC specification intended for centres in Wales (distinct from the Ofqual-regulated Eduqas version used in England). Content closely mirrors the Eduqas specification but is the version sat by Welsh students.

How the boards differ

All boards deliver the same Ofqual/Qualifications Wales subject content as a linear, tiered (Foundation/Higher) qualification with two equally weighted written papers and no NEA - required/core practicals are assessed inside the written exams rather than separately. The main differences are organisational. AQA (8461) splits seven numbered topics neatly between Paper 1 (topics 1–4) and Paper 2 (topics 5–7), uses 100-mark papers, and prescribes 10 required practicals. Edexcel (1BI0) uses nine topics with 'Key concepts' examined across both papers, 100-mark papers, and 8 core practicals. OCR is unusual in offering two distinct suites that a school must choose between: Gateway Science 'Biology A' (J247), a conventional content-led course, and Twenty First Century Science 'Biology B' (J257), a context- and enquiry-led course built around 'ideas about science'; both use 90-mark papers. Eduqas (England) and WJEC (Wales) are the same awarding organisation's two regulatory versions - near-identical content, 90-mark components, questions framed in practical contexts, with higher-tier-only material highlighted in bold. Because Biology is a sciences subject there are no 'set texts' or optional depth-study choices; the practical choice that matters is which board (and, for OCR, which suite) a centre adopts.
