Print both pages back to back and you get eight cards, cut along the lines. Page one holds the questions, page two the answers, laid out so card 1 lands on card 1. Writing your own cards is doing the revision; buying a pre-made deck skips the part that works and leaves you with somebody else’s shorthand.

Print double-sided, flipping on the long edge. Run one test sheet before you print twenty: printers vary, and a set of cards with the answers a centimetre off the edge is a wasted afternoon.

A card is a question, not a heading

The commonest mistake is writing "Osmosis" on the front and a paragraph on the back. Nothing is retrieved: you read the word, flip, and read the paragraph, which is copying with extra steps.

Write the front as something you can answer out loud. "What moves in osmosis, and which way?" gives you something to fail at, and failing at it is the moment the card starts working.

Answer before you flip, every time

Say the answer aloud or write it down first. The flip is the feedback, not the revision, and a deck flipped without answering feels productive while teaching you almost nothing.

Sort as you go: the ones you got wrong go back into the pile a few cards later, the ones you nailed go to the back. Cards you have known for a fortnight can leave the deck entirely.

Printing them double-sided

Choose double-sided and flip on the long edge, which is the default on most printers. The backs page is laid out in mirror order for exactly that setting, so the answer to card 1 ends up behind card 1 rather than behind card 2.

If your printer only does single-sided, print both pages, hold them up to a window to line the grids up, and glue them back to back before cutting. It is fiddly once and fine forever after.

When flashcards are the wrong tool

Cards suit facts, definitions, formulae, dates, key words and anything with a short crisp answer. They suit a six-mark explanation badly, and they suit a maths method worse. You cannot flashcard your way to being good at simultaneous equations; you have to do simultaneous equations.

A common trap in the sciences is a deck of ninety perfect definition cards belonging to somebody who still cannot answer a question that applies them. If your subject is mostly application, cards are a warm-up and the questions are the work.

For the subjects cards cannot reach
