Card 1 of 10
Proportion
Direct proportion
What does it mean for two quantities to be in direct proportion, and how do you test a table for it?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Direct proportion
Key points
- When one is multiplied by a number, the other is multiplied by the same number.
- So y ÷ x is the same for every pair of values: that constant is k in y = kx.
- Zero of one goes with zero of the other, like the cost of 0 kg of apples.
x: 2, 5, 8 and y: 6, 15, 24
6 ÷ 2 = 3, 15 ÷ 5 = 3, 24 ÷ 8 = 3
y ÷ x is always 3, so y = 3x
Watch out
y rising as x rises is not enough: y ÷ x has to stay the same for every pair.
Proportion
Inverse proportion
What does it mean for two quantities to be in inverse proportion, and how do you test a table for it?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Inverse proportion
Key points
- When one is multiplied by a number, the other is divided by the same number: double one, the other halves.
- So x × y is the same for every pair of values.
- Speed and journey time: twice as fast covers the same distance in half the time.
x: 2, 4, 8 and y: 12, 6, 3
2 × 12 = 24, 4 × 6 = 24, 8 × 3 = 24
x × y is always 24, so y =
Watch out
y falling as x rises is not enough: x × y has to stay the same for every pair.
Proportion
The unitary method
How do you scale a recipe or a price using the unitary method?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
The unitary method
Key points
- Go down to one unit first: divide by the number you have.
- Then go up to the number you need: multiply.
- Work in one unit throughout, such as pence or grams.
Example
5 pens cost £3.40, so 1 pen costs 3.40 ÷ 5 = £0.68
8 pens cost 8 × 0.68 = £5.44
6 cakes need 270 g of flour: 1 needs 45 g, 10 need 450 g
Watch out
Scale by multiplying, never by adding: 4 cakes to 7 cakes is not 3 more grams.
Proportion
Workers and time
How do you solve an inverse proportion problem, such as more workers doing a job?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Workers and time
Key points
- More workers means less time, so the logic flips.
- Find how long one worker would take: multiply the workers by the time.
- Then divide by the number of workers you need.
3 painters take 8 hours
1 painter takes 3 × 8 = 24 hours
4 painters take 24 ÷ 4 = 6 hours
Watch out
If 4 builders take 6 days, 8 builders take 3 days, not 12: more builders, less time.
Proportion
Best buys
How do you work out which of two packs is better value?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Best buys
Key points
- Work out the price of one unit for each pack, such as pence per gram.
- The lower price per unit is the better value.
- Or find how much you get per penny: then the bigger amount wins.
400 g for £1.20 or 650 g for £1.82
120 ÷ 400 = 0.3p per gram
182 ÷ 650 = 0.28p per gram
The 650 g pack is better value.
Watch out
Compare the same thing for both packs: pence per gram against pence per gram.
Proportion
Graphs of direct proportion
What does a graph of direct proportion look like, and what does its gradient tell you?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Graphs of direct proportion
Key points
- A straight line through the origin, (0, 0).
- The gradient is the constant k: the price per kilogram, or the exchange rate.
- Read one pair of values off the line, then scale it.
An exchange rate: £50 = €58
Gradient = 58 ÷ 50 = 1.16 euros per pound
£120 = 120 × 1.16 = €139.20
Watch out
y = 2x + 3 is straight but misses the origin, so it is not direct proportion.
Proportion
Graphs of inverse proportion
What does a graph of inverse proportion look like?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Graphs of inverse proportion
Key points
- A curve that gets closer and closer to both axes but never touches them.
- It is the shape of y = : as x grows, y shrinks, and neither ever reaches 0.
- Every point on the curve gives the same value of x × y.
Points on y =
(1, 12), (2, 6), (3, 4), (4, 3), (6, 2)
x × y = 12 at every point
Watch out
A straight line sloping down is not inverse proportion: x × y changes along it.
Proportion
HigherDirect proportion equations
How do you find and use the equation when y is directly proportional to x²?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Direct proportion equations
Key points
- Proportional means "equals a constant times": y ∝ x² becomes y = kx².
- Write the equation first, then put in the pair of values you are given to find k.
- Write the equation again with k in, then use it to answer the question.
y = 48 when x = 4. Find y when x = 5
y = kx², so 48 = k × 16 and k = 3
y = 3x²
x = 5: y = 3 × 25 = 75
Watch out
Dividing 48 by 4 gives k = 12: it uses x instead of x².
Proportion
HigherInverse proportion equations
How do you find and use the equation when y is inversely proportional to x or x²?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Inverse proportion equations
Key points
- Inverse proportion puts x on the bottom: y = , or y = for the square.
- Find k by multiplying: k = y × x, or k = y × x².
- Then substitute the new value of x.
y ∝ , and y = 4 when x = 3
y = , so 4 = k ÷ 9 and k = 36
y =
When x = 6: y = 36 ÷ 36 = 1
Watch out
Writing y = kx for an inverse proportion: when y = 6 at x = 4, y = , not y = 1.5x.
Proportion
HigherSquares, cubes and roots
If x is multiplied by a number, what happens to y when y is proportional to x², x³ or ?
Answer it in your head, then turn the card over.
Squares, cubes and roots
Key points
- y ∝ x²: multiply x by 2 and y is multiplied by 2² = 4.
- y ∝ x³: multiply x by 2 and y is multiplied by 2³ = 8.
- y ∝ : multiply x by 4 and y is multiplied by = 2.
- Inverse: y ∝ means multiplying x by 2 divides y by 4.
y ∝ x³ and x is multiplied by 3
y is multiplied by 3³ = 27
If y was 5, it becomes 5 × 27 = 135
Watch out
With y ∝ x², tripling x does not triple y: it multiplies y by 9.
Print these cards
Four cards to an A4 sheet, each the size of a standard A6 revision card.
One-sided
Each card prints on one face: the question at the top, the notes under it.
Two-sided
Questions on the front, notes on the back. Print double-sided and flip on the long edge, then cut along the lines.
